Festivals in Fukuoka

1. Hakata Gion Yamakasa

Hakata Gion Yamakasa is an annual summer festival held from July 1 to 15 by Kushida Shrine in Fukuoka City. With a history stretching back ovr 750 years, in 1979 it was designated an Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property.
A Yamakasa is a portable shrine to carry a deity during a festival. There are two types: the Kazariyamakasa (decorated floats) and Kakiyamakasa (carried floats). At the climax of the festival, local teams carry the Kakiyamakasa and race at full speed along a 5 km (3.1 miles) course. At 4:59 a.m., with the beast of a drum, the first team carries its Kakiyamakasa and depart from Kushida Shrine, with the others following at 5 minute intervals. The team compete to complete the course in the fastest time. Despite the early start, the spectacle attracts 850,000 tourists from all over Japan. The team yell the traditional chant, "Oissa! Oissa!" as the excitement peaks, and throw water on the men as they pass to cheer them on. The headlong dash lasts for about 30 minutes, as the several hundred members of the teams take turns carrying the float in a fever pitched atmosphere.

2. Nishinihon Ohori Fireworks

Nishinihon Ohori Fireworks display event boasts the biggest scale in the city with 6,000 shots of fireworks and thousands of visitors. Fireworks are shot off from the central island of a pond in Ohori Park, and you can see them all from around the lake. It is held in the evening on August 1 every year.

3. Hojoya

Many locals of Fukuoka City have once or twice been to Hojoya, one of the three major festivals in Hakata, wearing kimono (Japanese traditional clothes). This festival of Hakozaki Shrine in Hakata ward is held every year from the 12th to 18th of September. The approach of the shrine stratching along 1 km becomes filled every day and night with about 700 stalls and steady stream of visitors. Hojoya is originally a shrine ritual to pay respect to everything alive and prohibit killing. Many people also visit the shrine on this occasion to give thanks to the rich harvest of autumn an pray for traffic safety and business success.

4. Kokura Gion Festival

Kokura Gion Festival is a nationally renowned festival in which drums play the major part. During this soul-stirring festival, drums are beaten from the both sides to the sound of gongs called "Jangara."

5. Kanmon Strait Firework Festival

At the Kanmon Strait Firework Festival, held on August 13 each year, fireworks are set off from Moji, and across the stait, from Shimonoseki City. Fireworks simulataneously set off from the two places light up the night sky both near and far; both coasts are crowded with viewers.
