Student's Interview

Update:10/06/01
NILS had a ceremony for new students on April 13th 2010.
Find out what they now have to say after spending 2 months in Japan!
Interviewer
How is your study at NILS so far?
David Riat
It’s going well. Kanji is very complicated and difficult, but interesting. I am interested in the way of Kanji writing.
Interviewer
What do you think about your teachers?
David Riat
Teachers are good. Each one has different personality. Some are strict, some are not. Some are slow, some are fast. We learn grammar, conversation, Kanji, and so on.
Interviewer
Have you joined any activities?
David Riat
Yes, I joined an international friendship party and an excursion to Kumamoto. The party was good. I tried to use Japanese. Kumamoto castle was very impressive. I visited Osaka and Himeji castles which are bigger than Kumamoto one, but each one is different. That makes it interesting.
Interviewer
What do you do when you’re off?
David Riat
I have some Japanese friends in Fukuoka city. I often meet them. We exchange languages each other. I like exploring, so I go shopping and do sightseeing in Fukuoka city.
Interviewer
Do you have any plans after your graduation?
David Riat
Not yet. But I might be studying Chinese or Korean language. I’m interested in language very much.
Interviewer
Would you like to say something to your friends in your country?
David Riat
Well, if you would like to come to Japan for studying, you should well prepare for it.
If you are planning to visit here as a tourist, I’m sure you discover so many interesting things! Japanese people are very friendly.
Update:10/04/06
After the graduation ceremony held on March 8, we had a interview with one of the graduates, Micaela from Canada.
Interviewer
How was the graduation ceremony and party?
Micaela
The ceremony was good, it went by very quickly. The party was great because it gave the graduates and teaching staff one last chance to spend a few hours together having fun. Everyone seemed to enjoy it.
Interviewer
You first planned to finish the course in a year, but you extended your study at NILS.  Right?  Why?
Micaela
I chose to continue studying at NILS, because I simply felt that one year of Japanese language study was not enough for me. After spending a year getting to know the students and staff, I felt that I wanted to graduate the same time as everybody else, with the same amount of skill as my classmates.
Interviewer
How was your study at NILS?
Micaela
It was very interesting and it allowed for many great experiences. The trips to Nagasaki and Dazaifu were fun, and gave us a chance to visit places we might not otherwise go in our own free time.
Interviewer
Do you want to tell anything to teachers?
Micaela
I would like to thank the teachers for their patience and outstanding support.
Interviewer
Thank you.  We are so glad to hear that.  Well, what will you do after graduating from NILS?
Micaela
I am entering a Pro Musician Course at Fukuoka School of Music in Hakata. My goal is to continue studying Japanese through practical use.
Interviewer
Any messages to those who intend to come and study in Japan?
Micaela
The most important thing you need to understand is that it's not going to be easy all the time, you're going to have troubles, and you might even feel like giving up, but the most important thing is that you don't. NILS not only offers you a chance to study Japanese, but it offers you real life experience in a foreign country. There are many adventures and new experiences waiting for you at NILS, and no matter what happens, good or bad, you can be made a better person because of it. As my favorite quote says, "Don't be anything less than everything you can be."  Come to NILS, and maybe I'll see you around!
Interviewer
Thank you very much, Micaela.  We hope you will be successful in the future.
Update:10/02/03
Two students finished their study at NILS.
We asked them how their study was with us.
Interviewer
Is this your first time to come to Japan?
William
Yes, it is our first time to Japan.
Interviewer
What is your impression of Japan?
William
People are very polite and very discipline. All toilets are very clean. Fukuoka’s sightseeing is very beautiful. We like Fukuoka very much. “Tenjin chikagai wa tanoshi desu (It is fun to shop at Tenjin underground shopping arcade).”
Interviewer
What do you think about this one month Japanese course at NILS?
Hoi
It has been very good. William and I enjoyed the course very much. Sensei(teacher) are very kind and patient. We are glad that we choose NILS to learn Japanese.
Interviewer
As you know we usually have an activity and a test every Wednesday, so what do you think about it?
Hoi
It is very good. Test is necessary. It makes us to review vocabulary and grammar more and know whether we had mastered. Actually we need to be tested more to stimulate.
Activity is fun and good. We love it. We went to Hakatamachiya, did Sado (tea ceremony) and Origami (paper folding). During activities we learned more Japanese culture and local people’s day to day life.
Interviewer
Where did you go when school was off?
William
We went to Dazaifu shrine, Tenjin and Hakata for shopping.
We went to flea market. It’s very interesting to bargain in English and Japanese, a little bit tough, but we bought a very cool camera made in 1970’s with good price.
We went to Yanagawa, too.
Interviewer
Did you try Kawakudari (a boat ride down the waterway around the castle)?
William
Yes, we did. The man introduced a lot and sang to us, but we couldn’t understand his Japanese, so we should learn more Japanese. (laugh).
Interviewer
Well, hope you keep on studying Japanese.
William/Hoi
Yah, we will. It’s fun.
Interviewer
Do you want to come here again?
William
Yes, definitely. We are considering NILS summer course if we can get the vacation at that time.
Interviewer
Thank you very much for taking your time. Hope we will see you next summer again!
Update:09/11/4
Mr.Gustavo was born in New York, and took educations in the U.S. and France. He likes sports, especially skateboarding.
Interviewer
Hi, Gusutavo. How was the ceremony last week?
Mr.Gustavo
The entrance ceremony really made me feel the Japanese school experience. It may have been short, but we all understand that we had to work hard to achieve our goals, and that we all work as a team to help each other out.
Interviewer
Why did you choose NILS among many Japanese language schools in Japan?
Mr.Gustavo
NILS Japanese Language School is one of the easiest ones to find on the Internet. That made me find them. And because of their instantaneous assistance, I knew they were the most effective ones in teaching Japanese as well.
Interviewer
How do you want to use your Japanese language skills in your future?
Mr.Gustavo
I would like to use the Japanese language in order to get a scholarship for college. I already speak 3 languages, and know that the 4th one, like Japanese, will increase my chances of entering a good university.
Interviewer
About two weeks have passed since your arrival in Fukuoka. How is your daily life here in Japan?
Mr.Gustavo
I cannot complain. I have a great life here. After the Japanese classes, I have enough time to concentrate on homework, hobbies, and career-wise things. The people I have met are all very nice and welcoming, and it is a good place to live for students on budgets.
Interviewer
You are enjoying your life in Japan! At last, please tell us about your final goal at NILS.
Mr.Gustavo
My final goal is to speak fluent Japanese, just like everyone else!
Interviewer
Sure you will! Let us help you increase your language skills.
Thank you for taking your time for the interview.
