ENROLLMENT

When can I enroll in NILS programs?

[Intensive program]
Our 1 year and 2 years intensive program begin every April and October. However, our 1 ½ year program begins only in April. You are required to prepare the needed documents before the application due date.  If you need a student visa (Pre-college visa), we strongly recommend that you start preparing your documents at least 2-3 months prior to the application due date.

Our school offers flexible starting dates for the short programs.

What documents do I need for applying?

However, the documents that you finally submit to us may depend on your particular situation.  We will be glad to help you. Please consult with us while you are preparing documents.

Documents necessary to apply for a short program are the following.
1) Application form,
2)Passport copy,
3) Alien registration card copy (for holders only).

Is there an age limit?

We accept all students of any age except students who need to apply for a student visa.
If you are or will be applying for a student’s visa, then your age must be plus 5 years after your final education.

How do I apply for NILS?

[Intensive program]
You have to prepare required documents and submit them to us before the due date. After we scrutinize your documents, we will make an Eligibility application for you based on the documents you have submitted. They will be submitted to the Immigration Authority.
[Short program]
You can either post required documents to the school or e-mail us at info@ulearnjapanese.com.
In case you need an accommodation arrangement, you must register at least one month prior to the starting date.

How long does it take to be issued a pre-college visa?

Following submission of the official documents to the Immigration Authority, it takes approximately two and a half months before the “Certificate of Eligibility” is issued.  After the Certificate of Eligibility has been issued, a visa can be applied for at a Japan embassy or consulate.  Results are usually announced 2 to 4 weeks prior to the intended school entrance period.

How many hours of lessons are there per day?

[Intensive Program]
Each level of class is four hours per day and a total of 800 study hours over the year.  Each lesson is 45 minutes long.  There are morning class (8:40 to 12:10) and afternoon class (13:00 to 16:25).
[Short program]
Each level of class is  four hours per day.  Each lesson is 45 minutes long.  There is morning class only (9:00 to 12:25).  No classes are given on national holidays and some holiday school designated such as  “Obon” period and “Shogatsu” period.

You have two campuses.  Where do I take lessons?

[Intensive program]
Student in Intensive programs takes lessons at Ogori Campus. It takes about 30 minutes to go to Fukuoka City by train (Nishitetsu Omuta Line).
[Short program]
Students in short programs take lessons at Ohashi Campus, 5 minutes from central Fukuoka.

Do the teachers use English during classes?

No.  All classes are given in Japanese only. 
We believe using Japanese in the class is the most effective way to improve your language skills.  However, we support questions in English after class.

Are there any scholarships available?

There is a system where student who has excellent attitudes, grades, and attendance may be recommended, and if chosen, receive a scholarship.
Only student in the intensive program are eligible for the scholarship system.

DAILY LIFE

Is there a dormitory?

Yes.  There are some dormitories around school in Ogori. Each dormitory has 2-3 bedrooms, a dining/kitchen and a bathroom.  Each bedroom is well furnished with a desk, a chair, a bed, bed clothes, a small shelf, and an air conditioner.  There is no internet connection in the dormitory but students can make a contract with an internet service provider (for intensive program students only).

Am I allowed to do a part time job?

If you have a pre-college visa, after receiving “Permission to Engage in Activities Outside the Scope of the Visa” from the Immigration Authority, then you will be eligible to work for up to 4 hours per day.  It is not possible to receive this permission soon after entering school.  Following entry on a student visa, you may apply for this permission and a test, if you pass the test given by school one month later.

How much are living expenses per month?

Total average cost: 50,000 to 80,000 yen (not including monthly rent)
Example: Utilities 5,000 to 10,000 yen, Food: 20,000 to 30,000 yen, Mobile Phone 5,000 to 10,000 yen, Miscellaneous: 20,000 to 30,000 yen.
